View of the Grote Bavokerk on the Grote Markt in H View of the Grote Bavokerk on the Grote Markt in Haarlem, from the Gravenzaal of the City Hall. It remains a beautiful city, Haarlem where I was born and raised… Photos were taken just before Christmas 2024. The Christmas market was on the Grote Markt… #haarlem #haarlemcity #bavokerk #bavokerkhaarlem #grotemarkthaarlem #citywalk
I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas with images I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas with images from Stoos, Switzerland. The Maria Hilf Chapel on Stoos was built over 300 years ago.

In the middle of the idyllic mountain village of Stoos is the Maria Hilf Chapel. The small mountain chapel was consecrated in 1932 and services are still held there today. Many wedding couples say “I do” in the mountain chapel. In the evening it is beautifully illuminated. #winterwonderland #winterwalking #walking #snowwalking #switzerland #stoos #wandelen #winterwandelen #swiss #swissalps
A view of the Hekslootpolder with a few casemates A view of the Hekslootpolder with a few casemates and horses in sight. The Hekslootpolder is a polder and nature reserve between Haarlem-Noord and Spaarndam. It is a peat meadow area where birds breed. The area is part of the Spaarnwoude recreation area as a green buffer zone between Haarlem and Amsterdam. The Heksloot waterway is located in the area.

The polder is also part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, which was constructed between 1880 and 1914 and where it was determined that the firing range had to remain clear. The Oude Spaarndammerpolder is located between the Hekslootpolder and Fort bezuiden Spaarndam, which is part of the nature reserve. During the mobilisation of 1914-1918, a so-called ‘presentation’ was constructed to strengthen the Defence Line at Spaarndam. This was because it was feared that in the event of an English invasion, the existing works would not provide sufficient protection against the increasingly heavy artillery. The representation was also given an earthen wall with a front moat. Concrete group shelters were built behind this second line wall. The intention was to construct three rows of bunkers, but the third row was never completed after the end of the First World War. The shelters were to be connected by a trench system. The advantage of the large number of shrapnel-free shelters was a lower chance of being hit and a smaller loss of men. You can view the presentation and the intact appearance of the entire defence line excellently from the Spaarndamseweg and the walking path through the Hekslootpolder.

I like to walk around the Hekslootpolder from home. Away from all the hustle and bustle and enjoying what the Hekslootpolder has to offer in terms of peace and quiet.

The Amsterdamse Poort is an old city gate of Haarl The Amsterdamse Poort is an old city gate of Haarlem, Netherlands. It is located at the end of the old route from Amsterdam to Haarlem and the only gate left from the original twelve city gates. It was created in 1355 and is the only remaining city gate from the defenses of Haarlem. Until the 17th century it was the city gate used for traffic by land eastwards towards Spaarnwoude over the Laeghe weg (now Oude weg). In 1631 the Haarlemmertrekvaart was dug, which shortened the waterway from Haarlem to Amsterdam considerably. This gate, for those travelling by land, was called the Spaarnwouderpoort. With the new canal and its towpath, the trip was so short, it became much more popular, since it was now possible to travel back and forth to Amsterdam on the same day. Thus the name of the gate changed to Amsterdamse Poort. In 1865 the city government wanted to demolish the gate. A speedy procedure to put down the gate was requested, as the gate was in pretty bad shape and was blocking the construction of a new bridge on the location just in front of the gate. However, there was not enough money at the moment to construct a new bridge, so the city council agreed to provide funds for a short-term renovation of the gate to make sure it would stay up for two or three more years.
In 1867 the Papentoren, a tower, was demolished, and the munition that had been stored there needed a storage space. A room in the Amsterdamse Poort was suited for that and the munition was stored. In 1869 the bridge in front of the gate was finally reconstructed. In 1874 most of the (explosive) munition was taken outside the city.
In 1889 a small renovation was planned, with a budget of 1,490 guilders. The city architect, J. Leijh, started the project, which later required an extra 775 guilders.
In the 1960s the gate was declared a national monument. In 1985 a complete renovation of the gate took place. In my youth I grew up in the neighborhood of this gate and always asked myself how it would to live inside this building. #haarlem #citywalk #citywalking #walking #wandelen #stadswandeling #amsterdamsepoort
